Opened in February 2014, the Margaret & Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare embodies St. Joseph’s commitment to eradicating the stigma around mental illness by embracing holistic care and enhancing research into the causes and treatments for mental illness and addiction. It is an internationally recognized Centre and the most innovative facility of its kind in Canada.

HMECU is a proud sponsor of this event. Our support for St. Joseph's Healthcare and St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation continues as does the great work that they do throughout the community. World Police & Firefighter Games - August 13th to 16th

HMECU is a proud sponsor of the Hamilton Firefighters Football Team in the 2017 World Police and Firefighter Game, held in Los Angeles.

The first Police Olympics were held in San Diego, California in 1967. San Diego Police Captain Veon "Duke" Nyhus recognized the need to promote physical fitness and camaraderie amongst members of the law enforcement community. Duke formulated the idea of the Police Olympics and created the competition with an eye towards promoting physical fitness and sport as both a means for officers to, improve their overall fitness, reduce stress, and to increase their professional abilities. That first year 504 competitors registered for competition in 16 sports held over 2 days.

With the continuing success of the California Games, planning began in 1983 for the first World Police & Fire Games, which were held in 1985 in San Jose, California. The aim of the World Police and Fire Games is to offer the same variety of sports, and same high calibre of venues, officials and athletic achievement as the California Games, but on a global scale.

Subsequent World Police & Fire Games have been held biennially in San Diego, California; Vancouver, Canada; Memphis, Tennessee; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Melbourne, Australia; Calgary, Canada; Stockholm, Sweden; Indianapolis, Indiana; Barcelona, Spain; Quebec City, Canada; Adelaide, South Australia; British Columbia, Canada; and New York City, New York. The size and scope of the World Games continues to grow. Attendance has steadily increased as have the number of countries involved.

HMECU wishes the Hamilton Firefighters Football Team the best of luck in this year's Games!

Mental Health Week - May 1st to 7th

It is time to #GETLOUD for Mental Health Week! Positive mental health isn’t about avoiding problems or trying to achieve a “perfect” life. It’s about living well and having the tools to cope with difficult situations even during life’s challenges. Each person’s path to mental well-being is unique. We all have our own goals, our own challenges, our own talents and our own supports. But positive mental health is within everyone’s reach.

Staying mentally healthy is like staying physically fit— it requires effort. But the rewards are worth it! Everyone has to face stresses and demands, but we all need and deserve breaks. Unity Run - May 13th

First Responders by its inherent nature, have very unique stressors. Those unique stressors can become a significant problem for First Responders and their families and result into major issues such as PTSD. This year at The Unity Run we are promoting: “First Responders for Mental Wellness – Run New your Wellness”. New research is emerging around resiliency and one factor that increases ones resiliency is getting outside and being active.

Our goal is to raise awareness, remove stigma around mental health issues and promote mental wellness in our First Responder community. Your generous contribution to the Unity Run helps support the Canadian Critical Incident Stress Foundations - Camp F.A.C.E.S. - support camp for children of fallen Emergency Service workers & the H.E.L.P. Network - a First Responder Peer Support Group that is professionally facilitated FREE, CONFIDENTIAL and SAFE.

Together, with your contribution, we can raise awareness, we can remove the stigma faced by first responders and encourage them to reach out for help.

Ladies Night Out - March 23rd

ding free® Day

We’ve all been there. Standing in front of another financial institution’s ATM, just waiting to get dinged by a surcharge fee for accessing our cash. One dollar, two dollars, three dollars…the surcharges vary, but the frustration of getting “dinged” remains the same. That is, unless you belong to a credit union.

With access to a national network of ding free® ATMs from BC to Newfoundland, Canadian credit union members can keep more of their money where it belongs; paying no surcharge fees at thousands of credit union and other participating ATMs across Canada. It’s a network of ATMs that’s bigger than most banks and it’s all ding free.

For those members whose credit unions are on both ACCULINK® and THE EXCHANGE® ATM networks, the number of ding free® ATMs rises to more than 4,000. This adds up to a bigger ATM network than most banks!!
