Emergency Hurricane Relief Donations - November and December

The Commonwealth of Dominica Association, Hamilton (CODAH) is an established non-profit organization which has been in Hamilton for the past 38 years. Part of their mandate is to assist those who are less fortunate than we are, such as the elderly, those in dire need, and offering scholarship opportunities for youth in an effort to empower them.

They are now faced with an enormous and urgent task to raise much-needed funds to assist approximately 95% of the inhabitants on the island of the Commonwealth of Dominica, which was savagely ravaged by Hurricane Maria on September 18, 2017.

HMECU will be donating and asks that our membership come together as a community and support the island and the people. We have spoken to the CODAH and have compiled a list of the immediate needs below. Anything that you are able to provide will be greatly appreciated.

Immediate Needs:

  • Toiletries/hygiene kits/comfort kits
  • Toothpaste & toothbrushes
  • Flashlights & batteries
  • Diapers (children & adult)
  • Sanitary pads
  • Dried & canned milk
  • Water
  • Collapsible water containers (gallon)
  • Canned food items (beans, peas, vegetables)
  • Energy biscuits
  • Kitchen utensils/cutlery & cooking pans
  • New bath towels & wash rags

Now until Christmas, visit your local branch to drop off donations that will be provided to the CODAH and sent to Dominica!

Financial Literacy Month - November 1st to 30th

Since launching in November 2012, credit unions have helped to mark Financial Literacy Month (FLM) each November. This year’s FLM theme "Take charge of your finances: It pays to know!" promotes the idea that different stages of life demand different sets of financial literacy skills, and managing money and debt will help in making responsible financial decisions.

This year’s FLM aims to rally organizations and individuals across Canada to strengthen the financial literacy of Canadians and empower them to achieve the following goals:

  • managing debt wisely
  • saving for the future
  • understanding their rights and responsibilities
